Creating a topic sentence is essential in the interrogatory paragraph and the supporting paragraphs are an important element of nonfictional writing. Therefore learning the trick to write effective topic sentences is very essential presenting the main idea and supporting its information clearly for the audiences.  In this blog, we will discuss the importance of topic sentences, share some examples, and also provide tips for writing strong topic sentences for your future writings.

What is a topic sentence?

The topic sentence is generally the opening sentence for the paragraph and provides a general idea of the topic that will be explained in the paragraph. The topic sentence should be broad enough to provide information regarding multiple subtopics and examples and make sure that it does not affect the purpose of the writing.

Topic sentences help guide the audience by providing information regarding the subject in the rest of the paragraph. Topic sentences help relate the main idea of the entire writing and the present topic on which the paragraph is written. Topic sentences help provide structure to the paragraph and the whole piece of writing.

Difference between thesis and topic sentence

The thesis statement is a sentence that states the repeated focus on the entire writing. The thesis statement is generally provided after the hook statement or the topic sentence in the first paragraph of the writing to make a point that will be supported by examples in the entire writing. On the other hand, a topic sentence can be used to back up the thesis statement by introducing the topic of each supporting paragraph.

For instance:

Topic sentence for opening paragraph: Tea has been long enjoyed and studied for its large number of beneficial properties.

Thesis statement: Drinking tea has many positive effects on the health of the person due to the compounds present in it.

Therefore when you are writing an essay, you can large number of paragraphs discussing the different compounds present in tea and its benefits for human health.  The topic sentence in each paragraph will introduce a new topic such as cancer-fighting compounds present in green tea or how cholesterol level gets reduced due to tea. Both these topics support the thesis statements which say that tea is beneficial for health as it contains different types of compounds.
